Onondaga Cup semi final

These two teams have contested the last two Onondaga Finals, and today they were playing each other at the semi final stage. After having lost to Stockport twice already this season, but having beaten them at the recent 6 a side tournament, this was a game to see which team was really the better of the two. What we saw was a great team effort from all of the Timperley squad, with six different scorers and nine of the twelve goals being assisted. The team played a whole lot better than they did in the last round at Sheffield.

The start of the match was quite a slow one. Was that the nerves or the cold weather? However, there was only one team in the match for the first five minutes of the game. Timperley had all of the possession in this time despite losing the first face-off; Stockport’s #42 was trying to man mark Ed but eventually Timperley got the first goal of the match after relentless pressure. A great feed from Marius fed Will from up top and then an accurate finish past Stockport's helpless keeper. Will very soon returned the favour to Marius with another feed. This was some of the best lacrosse the team had played all year. After another goal from Marius, Timperley had a comfortable lead. It was just as well, as they let in a cheap goal where the defence was not marking tightly. Just before the end of the quarter Will scored again to give Timperley a 4-1 lead at the first break.

The second quarter was more even with Stockport having a lot more of the ball and a few more shots. Gregor and the defence managed to keep all of their shots out with some great hits from Matt and James. Gregor pulled off some fine saves. Jamie put himself on the line once in the first quarter and once in the second, throwing himself in front of the shots of the frustrated Stockport team. A goal and an assist from Ed, with the assisted goal coming from Louis gave Timperley a secure 6-1 lead at half time.

Into the third quarter, it was obvious that Timperley were not going to let Stockport back into the game. Four more goals for Timperley with no reply from Stockport pencilled Timperley's name in the Onondaga Cup Final programme for the fourth year in a row. With two early quarter goals from Ed, and Louis' again fed by Ed brought Timperley a seven goal lead. The second two goals came through Ben and Ollie. Ben's was a nice solo run and Ollie's was fed by Ed.

In the last fifteen minutes of the match, Timperley took their foot off the gas and everyone on the squad got a bit of game time; the gap still increased, but not by much. Stockport did get one goal through #42, though it was never going to be enough. He ran through the whole of our defence eventually scoring almost on his knees. A mere consolation goal, but still quite a good one. The two Timperley goals, first from Marius and then an amazing team goal brought the lead into double figures. The goal started with Ed passing the ball to Mason, then on to Harry who fed a great ball to Will who slotted the ball past the keeper. This was surely the best goal of the game. 12-2 the final score.
