U12 win Onondaga Cup for 4th year in a row

This was one the most exciting Onondaga Finals for a number of years, with only one goal separating the two teams after a pulsating 60 minutes of U12 lacrosse. For the second year in a row, Timperley were the underdogs and were playing unbeaten opposition. For the fourth year in a row, the Timperley name will be written on the trophy.

The first seven minutes were like a bad version of Groundhog Day. Timperley won the face, moved to goal, created a chance which was saved. Mellor cleared, attacked and scored. Three times. There must have been a couple of hundred people watching the game, and the Mellor supporters were already making a big noise. Great atmosphere, but Timperley needed to put the brakes on and gain a foothold in the game.

Timperley won the next face too, and finally managed some settled play against the Mellor six man zone. Some slick cutting and feeding created three good chances which were converted in quick succession by Will Greaves, Ed Loveland and Marius Robinson. 3-3 now and still in the first quarter…..more importantly we’d shown we could play and weren’t going to get blown away in a one sided match.

The second quarter saw Timperley’s worst period of play as we continually forced the ball in attack, gave away a lot of possession and failed to create any good opportunities. At the other end Mellor scored two more, including one in the final seconds of the half. Two goals down (3-5) at half time, and we were looking somewhat ragged.

Lots of input for the half time talk, a chance to reflect, adjust, and get the kids focussed and fired up. They had finally realised that this was a big game and they were not going to get the win easily.

The third quarter scoring started with a fourth Timperley goal by Ed Loveland on a man up, followed by a sixth for Mellor on their own man up to go ahead by two again. However, even though Timperley were down, their belief was still intact. The Timperley midfield now put their foot on the gas and for the rest of the game Mellor had little answer to the strength, skill and experience of this unit. The Mellor players were running at the Timperley defence but getting nowhere. Mellor committed more fouls, Ed Loveland scored another man up goal, whilst Marius Robinson fired in another. 6-6 at three quarter time.

Timperley were definitely in the ascendancy now, and took the lead for the first time by way of a top corner finish by Ollie Tomlinson, which was then quickly backed up by a third goal by Marius Robinson to make the score 8-6. The defence were not without action, and Gregor Allen made a couple of outstanding saves to keep the margin at two. Two minutes left and a time out was called by Mellor as they planned their final assault. We just wanted the get the ball back and to then keep it. We did the former, failed with the latter, Mellor scored a seventh and we had about a minute to try again. This time we managed it as Timperley won the ball and cleared it, Mellor fouled with 21 seconds left which allowed us to run the clock down on the man up to win the game. Final score 8-7.

To come back to win having been 3-5 down at the mid-point of the third quarter paints this squad in a really good light. Nothing came easily today; it was a real battle, and the players will be all the better for it. The outcome today was a reward for everyone on the squad, regardless of how much playing time individuals got. Well done everyone.
