Captain Dave Thayre won the toss and asked Newton Poppleford to bat first on a bit of a pudding following the recent deluge. Tipton had two debutants in their ranks, nos. 366 Ross Williams and 367 George Prismall. Williams had an eventful start taking a wicket with his first legitimate ball after his first was called a wide. Mahommadi was the unfortunate batter, the first of several to perish by top edging and sending the ball skywards. Not a good idea when John Buckland is in the field as he took 3 catches yet again. Buckland’s 2nd catch was more of an exocet he had to catch for fear on injury, Parker’s off drive to a ball from David Birch being well held.
With Louis Adey still at the crease hitting 8 boundaries and 3 sixes, the Tipton bowlers were fearful of him repeating the 148 he notched last season. Birch took a 2nd wicket thanks to a catch by Matt Davies to remove Crisp for 9. Phil Wright failed to hang on to a ball that Adey Jnr had hit vertical denying Matt Davies the valuable wicket. However, the drop was not too costly as Davies bowled him not long after. Adey’s sparkling 61 came from 47 balls.
The innings turned at the fall of this wicket and slumped from 84-3 to 118 all out.
John Buckland put the brakes on with two maidens removing Tom Clay, bowled for 18 and then Phil Wright took over and conceded just 6 runs in 6 overs. It was Sam Thayre who did the damage though. His somewhat erratic slow bowling was not always going in the right direction, but the batters somehow got themselves out from those that did. Aided by a good catch by Ross Williams and a stumping and catch by keeper Dave Thayre he took 4-7. Kenny Clay finally lost patience with Wright’s bowling and skied a ball to Luke Phillips at square leg as the innings ended on 118.
Tipton’s reply started well with George Prismall and Casper Meech. However, a good catch by Leigh Adey off Tom Clay saw Prismall depart for 10. Meech dominated the partnership with Luke Phillips as they added 29 before Phillips had his stumps rearranged by Asad Ullah for just a boundary.
Meech’s fine innings was ended when caught by Parker off Leigh Adey for 36 from 37 balls. Ross Williams ventured out of his crease and was stumped by Kenny Clay 1st ball. John Buckland smacked a 13 ball 25 but was then trapped LBW by Louis Adey. Matt Davies could not take Tipton to victory as he was bowled by Tom Clay for 25.
Amelia Bowers-Tolley skied a return catch to Adey Jnr after scoring a single, so it was left to Dave and Sam Stone to guide Tipton home in the 20th over with drinks remaining in he fridge.
