“Our Kuala Lumpur-bound bus ride started on a warm summer's evening when we met up with the Centaurs. As expected, we were all too excited to sleep, so we took turns with the iPad to the kids. Very soon, boredom overcame us and Chris cracked the first can.
He said, "Titans, we are on tour now, and we can’t travel dry. I have got a dozen cans here, lets all share 'em round"
Carla chimed in, "I'll have one!", and she got her can very promptly. Steve was too smart for that, and continued to take swigs from his flask."
That was how TITANS RFC's first ever overseas tour commenced. Thanks to the generosity and warm welcome of the Centaurs, we joined forces to enter a U7 team in the KL Saracens tournament. Our little players travelling together—Libby, Alex, Erin, Al and Zac—were incredibly excited. The very comfortable coach ride up got us to our hotel, where it was the perfect place for us to hit the pools then start the next day.
Breakfast begun promptly at 5am where a fantastic spread awaited us. Then, very quickly, we were on the bus to watch the sun rise at the grounds. Our first game was splendid—the little guys pushed Tanglin A hard, eventually going down by 2. We then took on HKFC B and got the W, with a 5-0 victory, to then fall to KL Tigers A 3-2. On the whole, it was a great first day with heaps of tries scored—Erin dotting down, Alex getting over multiple times, Libby making some awesome straight runs, and Zac and Al making excellent defensive tags at critical moments.
Saturday afternoon was spent relaxing by the pool, with parents enjoying beverages and the kids playing games and sports (so much energy). Come evening, the hotel hosted the giving out of awards and entertainment. Alex was awarded the player for the day in his level! Go, Titans!
With confidence high for some trophies coming our way, Sunday (trophy day) was something to look forward to. Being in the Saucer Group, we started off and won 5-0 first up in the Quarter Finals. We wanted to get the Big Blue Line, and the 1,2,3 and go pass working. They worked really well, and further success with 5-3 W over Cobrats sent them into the Final against Dragons. It was a great game indeed—we started with a bang with Alex managing to find space from the opening whistle, and get one in the corner. From there the defence of Libby and Zac forced a turnover, and Erin with her big booming voice driving the team forward took the ball forward with pace. We were over again, with the celebrations taking a NZ Sevens style approach with slit throats and glares. They were up for it, but Dragons fought back with 2 good tries of their own. Al was a demon in defence and forced a few turnovers. Libby wanted more ball and took it forward, and eventually, they managed to squeeze the winning try late in the game, bringing home the trophy. The kids left feeling so proud of themselves, plus it's a bonus that the parents thoroughly enjoyed the trip too.
We are planning another tournament in 4/5 June, so if you're interested, we encourage all Titans to talk to their coaches and get on board the next bus!
