Great start to the season by everyone!
Following a rusty start away against Kingsbridge, we won the Landrover Cup with some really good flowing rugby, going through the competition without losing a game and beating a strong Barnstaple side in the final on the Chiefs pitch at Sandy Park. We managed to win this at u11's last year as well, so really good to retain the trophy and maintain our status as 'top dogs' in Devon and Cornwall.
This was followed up by a really tough festival at Salisbury where we came up against some really good opposition but managed to make it through to the final where we played a very good Bridgend side who really blew us away with the speed of their play and ability to offload in contact. Some lessons for us all there (including the coaches!) about how we can improve what we do and add new dimensions to our game. For me this is one of the most positive aspects of playing slightly further afield - testing ourselves against different opposition and developing the way we play.
Last Sunday, a really emphatic win against Exmouth (who themselves played well but just couldn't get through our defence) on a bigger pitch which bodes well for next season when we will be playing 15 a side on full size pitches. Well done to the forwards (including those backs who 'volunteered' to play in the pack!) who kept up a fantastic work ethic all the way through, provided plenty of ball for the backs and managed to score a few tries themselves.
I want to say a special well done to all those who have joined us this season - you have fitted in incredibly well, both on and off the pitch, and are already adding significantly to the overall ability of the squad.
Looking forward to the second quarter of the season, we will be looking to build on our excellent rucking and defence with an emphasis on trying to keep the ball alive a little more - this will undoubtedly lead to one or two more mistakes but will really add an edge to our game as we build towards some tougher challenges towards the end of the season!
