Although up against a really tough and talented Paignton team, Topsham’s youngsters outplayed their opponents in most areas of play. Topsham’s support play was exceptional and space was consistently created by good passing. After a slow start Topsham also got their defensive line in order, although players could still be quicker to re-establish the defensive line after a successful tag.
Winning 10-7 in the first match and 11-5 in the second, both teams were in command throughout their matches on this sunny day. There were great performances from Jimmy Houghton, Sam Reay and Zac Brown who seemed to be able to score every time they had the ball. Also some good passing from Charlie Hill land Joe Clark to make space for their team mates. On the day however, the highest accolades went to Oliver Amos (Player of the Week) and to Jake Heywood (Talent of the week) for fantastic performances which demonstrated massive improvements in their rugby this year. Oliver is one of the first to attack a loose ball and now sees the benefits of running forward and straight; whilst Jake is concentrating well to avoid hitting touch and so benefitting from his great running skills.
Next week Chiefs AWAY – this is our last ‘normal’ match of the season with festivals the following week marking the last rugby this year.
