Topsham ladies got off to a terrific start to their league campaign with an emphatic win over Winscombe ladies. The side recruited well over the summer and went into the fixture with 6 new players, 4 of whom were to be starting their first ever rugby match.
The first game of the season inevitably comes with the additional purge of adrenalin, especially when the opposition are a fresh side to the league and sporting some cracking new players. However, Topsham, playing away to Winscombe, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon were the first on the scoreboard. In fact, there hadn’t even been a scrum when Topsham went over for their second, just inside 10minutes.
It was to be a difficult day at the office for the home side who squeezed in a try deep into the first half, after gaps in the Topsham defensive line allowed their number 13 to attack and score. However, the visitors’ tally of 6 tries and 5 kicks in the first half was enough to keep the confidence high and they continued with the same tenacity in the second half, slotting over a further 4 tries and 3 kicks. Winscombe were to catch the Topsham ladies napping on two more occasions, taking the final score to 17-66.
Tries from the Topsham side came from Rebecca Partridge, who touched down 4 times, Kerry Ackerman got two and also scooped up the forward of the match award for some outstanding support play as well as numerous darting runs. There were also tries a piece for the captain, Corinne Walsh, Meg Coombes Ann Webb and Charlotte Harvey who also won back of the match for some excellent skills at scrum half and scorching try! Webb also slotted 8 conversions.
Topsham play local rivals, Withycombe at Home next Sunday 16th September at 2:30pm and welcome as much support as possible so please pop along for a pint or cup of tea!
