A clear bright sunny day with a strong cold wind. Topsham had a strong squad of 23 available to take on a Cullompton, eager for revenge for their earlier defeat.
The first half was a tough slog, both sides putting in the hard work and the tackles, ground was hard won and it was anyones game, the boys showed great strength of spirit defending our 22 and a disputed try took the game to 5:0 at half time.
It was all about the second half , with missed opportunities and discipline needed against strict refereeing, the same for both sides though.
Forwards needed to find that extra strength to dominate and impose at the ruck, too many runners were isolated as fatique took hold, back to basics please, support the runner, latch on and be aggressive at the break down but mainly listen to the ref.
Backs stand a little closer in cold weather, a bit deeper on our ball and dont think you can do it all on your own, a pass creates space and opportunity, a few missed opportunities with Luca and Charlie possibly having a chance if the ball went to hand.
All need to keep positive and believe we can come back from being behind right up to the final whistle, be positive identify what needs to be done but dont dwell on negatives, great try and conversion from Cameron and Joe Cockram got us back into believing in ourselves and the last 10 minutes was Topshams game, unfortunately the clock beat us. Cullompton played a hard and determined game we can learn from this and take it on to our game v Exeter Youth next week. Final score 22:7.
