Topsham Winners

A damp drizzle greated both sides with a strong southerly breeze to give an advantage. Topsham fielded a squad of 20 strong players despite some notable absences in key positions, this meant we were light in props and another big thank you to Will Fox for stepping up at loose head, I can see a permanant position change?
Topsham had the wind advantage first half and took the game to the opposition from the off, winning at the ruck and freeing our backs to make good ground, likewise excellent defense with tackles being made time and again to neutralise Youth's route one attack plan. Harry Emmett raced away after a tense 5 minuutes of defending in our 22 to touch down with Will Oxland converting, 7:0 to Tops. Will converted a penalty to take us 10:0 up.
Youth reverted to their game of tight forward attack and after many Topsham infringements and off sides conceeding valuable ground, they went over for a well worked try and conversion. 10:7 at half time.
After a bit of half time magic we came out ontop for the first 10 minutes of the second half, showing greater energy , discipline and stamina which eventually lead to an amazing Luca Pym break away try with will O converting (great kicking boots today Will) 17: 7.
Fitness , injuries, discipline in giving free kicks and penalties put us on the back foot and we had to go into uncontested scrums 12 minutes into the second half. After a bit of a rule book referencing the game was still on, the final result would stand and away Topsham went finding strength and opportunity to put Josh Drew over to score, 22: 7.
We then had to look deep into ourselves and weather the storm as Exeter Youth attacked in our 22 time and again, excellent defense by the boys kept them out for some time but inevitably under such pressure and after conceeding so much ground Youth scored 2 more trys but did not convert so final score was Topsham 22 Exeter Youth 17.
A very hotly contested local derby with both sides pretty evenly matched, one day we will have a dry day to really show our running rugby skills off. Well done Topsham and we hope Joe Reseigh , who went to A&E for an xray to his ankle will be fit and well soon (Next week V Ivybridge?)
Training is at Topsham on Wednesday 1830.
