Not quite the result we wanted, but a performance worthy of the occasion between two of the best u16s teams in the South West.
A huge amount of commitment was shown by both sides, with Topsham demonstrating the progress they have made in their play, particularly in the forwards, since the last time we played Cullompton.
Having not been beaten since the final last season, it was intense match for us, in which Cullompton pinned us in our own 22 for longer periods than we would have liked. In the first half Sam B managed to push a great kick through the rapid oncoming Cull backs for Sam P to latch onto and put down for a much-needed try.
The score at HT was 8 – 15, where our impressive defending and great clearance kicking by DJ (throughout) saw us just about hold our own.
On another day the bounce of the ball in their 22, and a little more luck here and there may have generated another try or two, plus some penalties would have gone over.
A little more passing between ourselves to generate more 2 on 1 opportunities wouldn’t have gone amiss either. Going alone only works some of the time and rarely against teams of this calibre.
Overall the score at FT doesn’t quite do justice to level we played at and we deserved a little more in terms of points. It ended 8-22 and we have to acknowledge they are a good side, especially in contact.
Good work from Scott and Goggs throughout the game set the standard for all in terms of our contact play.
Text book tackling from Brin and DJ, a faultless performance under the high ball from Sam P, along with his and Guy’s great running and positioning stood out for me.
The good news is that there is plenty to be optimistic about in how we played and managed the game. We now have time to work on certain areas, mainly contact in the breakdown area and supporting the ball carrier.
We go again on 23 Dec v Cull. The boys and coaches have every reason to firmly believe that we will win this next fixture.
Thank you, Larry, for taking charge of the kit … and for gathering it up to wash it at the end. If you have numbered shirt at home, PLEASE RETURN IT ASAP.
