There was a welcome return to Cup winning ways on Sunday.
The boys did well, particularly the forwards, to build an impressive first half lead against a good Sidmouth side. An early try from Sam P, followed by another from him, both efforts showing his strength and determination. Another one from DJ saw us take control, despite Sidmouth scoring. There was then an impressive whole team try, which embodied our style of free flowing 15 man rugby, which was rounded off well by Josh. Marcus stood out as having a good half. HT 5-24.
After half time, playing uphill, we lost our way somewhat. Sidmouth have big ball carriers who used the slope to generate momentum and make their presence felt with three tries. This was compounded by our ball retention being poor at times, frustratingly either through kicking too readily or not passing sooner.
Furthermore our tackling at times wasn’t what it should have been. It was only through the try saving tackles of Guy and Sam P that their impressive winger was stopped on more one occasion. At one point the score was 22-29; too close for comfort in what was a must win game.
Thankfully we adapted, found our rhythm and Guy with one try, and DJ with two, plus a conversion, took us to 22-41 at FT.
Highlights of the match was our scrums performance. The forwards notably won the last scrum of the match against the head, which led directly to our last try right at the end of the game. The lineout functioned better this week with Goggs and Rhys at the helm, and Casper doing well. George, Alfie and Brin stood out for their tackling.
Break for a while from the Fisherman’s Cup. Thank you to Larry and Cheryl again for washing the kit from last week and from this match.
