Taunton has always be good opposition in past fixtures and today was no different.

With just 15 players Topsham started the game brightly with some well structure forward play, efficient rucking and quick clean ball which was well used by the backline. The high tempo start was rewarded with a line break try by Hamish F.

As the game went on Taunton started to make well earnt inroads into Topsham territory and asked some questions of the boys defence. It was pleasing to see that all the lads stepped up with a solid defensive line, impressively shutting the door on the fringes of the breakdown time and time again. This would have been even more impressive if we could consistently get the second man over the tackle zone first..... something to work on over the coming weeks. The first half continued to see some robust Topsham rucking snatching territory and fast close breaks on the fringes resulting in a second Topsham try, with Hamish F being driven over the whitewash.

With a heavy sticky pitch fast flowing rugby would always be tricky with much good Topsham play falling just at the last step. Playing with the wind in the second half Taunton continued to batter a resolute defence with long kicks and some strong running when Topsham struggled on occasions to retain the ball..... it is difficult to play without the ball! Taunton's efforts saw them rewarded with a well earned try and conversion mid way through the second period.

It can often be said it is defence that decides who wins a game and today was a good example of that with a few players putting in big d-shift against big opposition, often being a thorn in the side of the 10 and hustling the Taunton backline. As in the first quarter the last quarter saw Topsham revert to doing the simple stuff well... the best way to play rugby and were rewarded with final try from Oli S.

A tough game that I am sure that some of the boys will be feeling the bumps from this evening. There was some great work by all today and with some simple things to work on over the coming weeks. Well done to all....another good result against good opposition, but best of all.....all 15 playing for their mates, congratulating each other and picking each other up.......the real core values of rugby.

Final Score : Topsham 17 (3 x tries, 1 x con) vs Taunton 7 (1 x try , 1 x con)
