A great turn out on Sunday, once again dwarfing the opposition squad size, we turned out in full Santa headgear. It was heavy underfoot but good rugby conditions and Teignmouth were ready for a battle. Our first quarter was tentative and once again, we were out-rucked, playing as individuals and Teignmouth tacked their hearts out. Our defence was overwhelming and the pressure told, some excellent offensive rugby leading to a hatful of tries, spread across the team.
Credit to Teignmouth, they kept their spirits up and worked hard to try and get back in the game, but our quality showed through in the third quarter and some wonderful tries were scored across the team, coupled with more teamwork at the rucks, to make it a very comprehensive win.
Great play across the team and a wonderful way to sign off for 2017. Well played all and have a great Xmas.
v Teignmouth 17/12/2017
After some good work in our handling drills during the warm-ups, we seemed to hit the ground running for once, & took off from the start.
Teignmouth started quite well, & managed to win a couple of rucks, but that was to be it for the most part. Although they toiled hard all day, they didn't manage to break through our defences.
Our guys were quite ruthless, in both attack & defence.
Joe Fordham had an outstanding day, with his running the back line, & throwing some lovely long balls, for our outside speedsters to score some fantastic tries.
It was great to see that Olly hasn't lost his confidence after the Sidmouth match, coming back with a vengeance. He made a massive tackle on one of their larger players, using his great technique to drive the guy backwards about 5 metres. This was then followed up by some good support play; either Joe F or Jacob A could have scored, but they put the ball through the hands & Olly was the grateful recipient and finished with a try in the corner. This was a wonderful team try, which went through everyone's hands, from the runs, the mauls & the rucks.
Finlay managed to get a number of tries, running some great lines, & using the space of our larger-than-normal pitch. Great to see our fast outside guys, Finlay, Reilly, Ioan & Jayden receiving so much ball. This is what happens when we can get the ball through the hands. We didn't squander as many chances as we usually do, which was really pleasing. And although the opposition weren't as strong, it still showed discipline from our guys to play some lovely flowing rugby.
There was some great driving maul play from Will BT, the 2 Ed's, Tully, Jayden & Ioan, although Ioan at one point got a little excited, grabbed our player who had the ball (Jayden I think), & trying to drive him over the line from 10 metres out, managed to part-tackle him instead, but they both managed to come out of it okay. It's great that you are so keen on the driving mauls Ioan, & although this one didn't work out this time, I'm really happy that you tried. Rather that you try & it doesn't come off (but you learn from it), than you stand there and just watch your teammate try & drive on their own. Keep up the great work Ioan.
The ref (Teignmouth coach) could have called the match off due to the scores against them, but to their credit, their boys kept playing & played their socks off, so well done Teignmouth.
On another note:
Just before we started our own matches, Graeme was asked to referee the u15's match as their ref cancelled on them, so he gave up watching his own son play, to help out the 15's. Hats off Graeme, job well done!!
The whole team performed so well (as a team), & halfway through the season, we are in a good place.
Well done to our whole squad, & I hope you all have a great Christmas, & look forward to catching up in 2018,
