Topsham Colts played Crediton away on Saturday 12th November.
After a very poor outing against Exmouth last week it was important for players and coaches alike to recover some form and get the wins flowing again.
Topsham looked more intent than in previous games and attacked from the outset. A good series of passes and support play ended with fly half Ben Ward looping around to take a pop pass and go over in the corner. Topsham continued to have the lion’s share of territory and possession throughout the first half but Crediton tackled well breaking up a number of promising attacks. Mid way through prop Connor Pettitt ran an excellent line from close range to go over and with the conversion put Topsham 12 – 0 ahead. The pressure continued with flanker Ben Hawley dominating the line outs and second row Grant Clarke making his presence felt at the break down. The half ended with Ben Hawley appearing in the mid field to take a pass from Ben Ward and go over leaving Topsham 17 – 0 ahead at the break.
Fortunately there was a good subs bench so Topsham were able to bring on 7 players at half time giving everyone good game time. The second half was more even with both teams playing well and Crediton never out of it. A try each with Topsham’s by winger Callum Kenworthy and a penalty kick by Crediton brought the game to a close with Topsham winning by 22 – 8.
This was a great game of rugby to watch played in excellent spirit.
Topsham Colts have now won the Devon East Merit Table and now enter the Devon Cup Merit League with the County’s best teams. Much stiffer tests lie ahead but whatever happens in the rest of the season, it’s been a great effort by the players to make it this far.
