Brand new territory once again today, at a warm and sunny Nuneaton RFC where we were looking for a positive response to last week’s setback. Could we show a high level of pressure and intensity right from the kick off and keep it going throughout and qu

That question was answered quickly and emphatically. Straight from the kick off Tows were on their game with everyone doing their job. Early pressure and slick passing found JJ out wide and he ran it in under the posts. Harvey’s conversion sealed the perfect start. 7-0 Tows. With no time to collect their thoughts, Nuneaton were on the back foot again, this time resulting in a try for Jacob. 12-0 Tows. Excellent team work and pressure had created the perfect start but we were well aware this needed to continue.

And continue it did! The next try was a well drilled move from a Tows line out. A superb drive to the try line gave Josh the chance to put the ball down for Tows to now lead 17-0. Despite this dominance, it was still important not to give anything away and let Nuneaton back into the game. No fear of that as Reuben added to the score line with the fourth try of the game. Tows were now 22-0 ahead and bossing it!

By now, Nuneaton were struggling to contain a Tows side who were rampant. Any hope of a comeback quickly disappeared when debutant Rory ran in two consecutive tries which owed a lot to pace and resilience. With Harvey converting both, we went in at half time 36-0 ahead. It was difficult to remember a better half of rugby. An outstanding team effort was being rewarded by a score line which was the least the team deserved, having had a couple of tries disallowed.

From an easy team talk at half time, could this standard of performance be maintained? A big ask given how good we were in the first half. But any danger of Nuneaton being given an easy second half quickly passed. A pass to JJ inside his own half seemed to pose no threat to the opposition but he managed brush aside tackle after tackle until somehow breaking free and out pacing the floundering Nuneaton defence to score an amazing try. With a conversion from Harvey to follow, Tows now led 43-0.

By now the writing was on the wall for Nuneaton. They have given their all but were being outplayed in every department. And so, the scoring just continued. Tommy was next up with a try, created by a willingness to run at defenders, which he had been doing all afternoon. A fine reward for an excellent performance. Next up was Lucas, capping another good performance with a try that put Tows 55-0 up after Harvey’s conversion. Soon after, Jacob was in again to make it 60-0 and an amazing debut by Rory was capped by his hattrick try to make it 65-0. A great effort by Joe to convert just went wide.

This was the last of the action as Nuneaton’s injury list became untenable and they called the game with ten minutes left. A good side that had been given no chance to play their own game, who suffered big hit after big hit and who came across team playing at a level and intensity they had no answer to. As for Tows, it was a performance where every player could be proud of their contribution and a dream day for the coaches. A massive well done to all.
