Tows pick up two titles in end of season Finals

Towcestrians finished the season on a high claiming two prestigious titles in four days, firstly, under the lights of Franklins Gardens the Tows 1st XV retained the Alliance Cup with a comfortable 18 - 27 victory against Northampton Old Scouts and, not to be outdone, the Tows 2nd XV picked up an amazing double by claiming the Midland Reserve League title in a thrilling 21 - 22 victory against Old Luctonians at neutral ground Sutton Coldfield

The Alliance Cup was retained on Wednesday night when a near full strength Tows took on Old Scouts who a week earlier had claimed the Lewis Shield at the same venue, Tows started well getting early points when a penalty was slotted home by James Falvey, who crossed the line after good build up play for the first try five minutes later to extend Tows lead, and when Falvey slotted his second penalty to take Tows out to an early 11 - 0 lead it looked like a long night ahead for Scouts, however, Scouts responded with real purpose and attacked flat and on the gain line forcing Tows defence to work hard, a series of phases saw Scouts advance down the field and cross the line for a try of their own, Falvey responded with a penalty which was quickly countered by Scouts penalty and when prop Pete Gowler crossed after a driving maul from a lineout Tows looked to be control at 19 - 8 but a late penalty gave Scouts hope on the stroke of half time to turn around just 8 points behind at 19 - 11

Tows worked hard in the second half but lacked penetration in attack and made it easy for the Scouts defence, Tows extending their lead through another Falvey penalty, the decisive moment came when a break down the right saw Pepe Nanci bundle over for a try to take Tows out to a 27 - 11 lead, Scouts battled to the end and crossed in the 80th minute for a consolation try and conversion, final score 27 -18 and Tows retain the Alliance Cup.

On Saturday it was the turn of Tows 2nd XV, the side has battled with limited numbers all season in a division populated by teams in both National 2 and 3 and had done brilliantly to make the end of season league showdown, but saved the best till last, edging out Luctonians in a thrilling match played in a blowing gale, Tows tries coming from Jack Wilson, Pete Gowler and Pepe Nanci, Nanci converting two tries and then kicking a crucial penalty to edge out the three converted tries by the opposition and lift a deserved title.

Once again the Towcestrians would like to thank their loyal supporters, valued sponsors and especially the players and coaches whose hard work and dedication has produced these fantastic Cup results. The Tows press office would like to thank the pitchside reporters and in particular Bob Price who has again reported on all 1st fixtures home and away. We look forward to seeing you in the clubhouse and pitchside home and away next season. Come on you Tows.
