Lutterworth RFC 1XV 20pts Vs Towcesterians RFC 1XV 63pts
09th October 2010
Towcester spluttered like a old engine at Lutterworth on Saturday – taking time to warn up, even adding the odd misfire, before purring into life and racing way at full speed.
Urged forward by their vocal home support, Lutterworth took the game to Towcester and went head through an early try from their No 8.
Matt Yuill, moving from his more familiar spot at full-back to play at No 10 for Towcester, clawed the way back through tactical kicking.
Lutterworth cracked under the pressure exerted by Yuill’s boot and Towcester left wing Aaron Goodman crossed for a try which Yuill converted. With their noses just in front, Towcester now put themselves under pressure by flapping back line out ball.
Ever eager to spoil at the set play, the Lutterworth pack pounced on loose ball and poured through to cross for a second and lead 10-7.
Towcester responded by running the ball and full back James Falvey burst through to score wide out. Yuill added the conversion and a subsequent drop goal but with Lutterworth also adding three from the boot, there was still everything for which to play at 13-17.
Scrum half Austin half Austin Wheldon, back to his sparkling best, ignited the travelling support by turning the tables on Lutterworth. He capitalised on their line-out to score a trademark opportunist try. Yuill added the extra points and Towcester turned round 13-24 up.
Yuill got the second half under way with a penalty and then good ball retention lead to Goodman’s second try. Towcester now burst into life. Stringing moves together, they began scoring at will. Wheldon crossed for his second and Chris Kirby added his name to the score sheet.
Lutterworth came back with a try under the posts but by now Towcester were at full revs. Tries followed form Dave Stocks, Barry Adams and Nathan Payne, who like teammate Yuill is the son of a Towcester legend called Steve, to see the visitors safely home.
