Towcestrians RFC 1st XV 41pts Vs Northampton Old Scouts RFC 1st XV 19pts
13th November 2010
Towcester shrugged off a sluggish start to vanquish their Northampton rivals at Greens Norton Road.
The hosts struggled to come to terms with the conditions early on, allowing the visitors to take a six point lead through two Jack Green penalties.
After a period of stalemate where neither side threatened the line, David Devlin-Jones chased his kick ahead and appeared to score.
Towcester were awarded a scrum however and drove back the Scouts pack for scrum half Dave Stocks to score.
Now settling into the game, Towcester backs combined to put together a move which left Scouts flat-footed and Devlin-Jones injected the pace to make a score.
Matthew Yuill added the conversion and Towcester turned round with a narrow 12-6 lead.
Soon after the re-start, Yuill and the thunderous Matt Bodily linked to put the supporting Barry Adams over for a try which Yuill converted.
Scouts fly-half Green kept Scouts in the game by kicking a third penalty and then fielding a kick ahead and running through the admiring Towcester defence to score the visitors’ first try.
Ronnie Speakman came on to take Stocks’s place at scrum half and Stocks moved out to the wing.
The tactical switch paid off moments later when Stocks streaked over the line to score and Yuill’s conversion, combined with an earlier penalty, made it 29-14.
Towcester continued to play to their strengths by moving the ball wide and scored two further tries form Yuill and wing James Falvey.
Scouts came back with a final score from lock James Sargisson but by this time the match was beyond their reach.
