Towcestrians RFC 1stXV 25pts Vs Leicester Vipers RFC 1st XV 17pts
11th December 2010
Towcester maintained their winning ways as rugby returned to Greens Norton Road after two weeks in the deep freeze.
They came out best in a key League battle against Vipers to move to the top of East Midlands 2 East (South) table.
Towcester shook off the rust with an early try from flanker Yuon Skelton.
Another quickly followed from Dave Stocks who finished off a break out from deep by lock Craig Holton.
Fly half Matt Yuill converted to put Towcester 12-0 up, but the sticky pitch played to Vipers’ game and heavy pack.
A Matt Yuill penalty eased Towcester further ahead and Stocks tried to ram home the initiative but was held up just short.
He found his pack in support however and lock Chris Kirby dotted down to leave Towcester 20 points to the good at half time.
Towcester fell back into bad habits by conceding a string of penalties in a feisty game which saw a rash of yellows and one red card.
They put themselves under pressure as a result and Vipers No 8 Zack Higgs capitalised with a score for the visitors.
Towcester skipper Liam Wilkinson restored the 20 point lead with a five pointer of his own but the last quarter belonged to Vipers.
The visitors crossed twice more but Towcester did just enough to stop Vipers gaining a losing bonus point.
With Peterborough Lions failing to secure a winning bonus point against Bugbrooke, Towcester go top on points difference.
