Tows back to top of Table after bonus point win

Towcestrians moved back to the Top of South West 1 following their trip to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds to face Witney.

The Match started brightly for the Tows with Fullback Matt Yuill crossing out wide after the Witney pack had failed to cope with Tows scrummage and Yuill soon followed it with a second benefiting from good hands through the backs, the normally reliable Scott Browne failed to convert either try and a penalty and with two successful conversions from the Witney no.10, Jed Whitehouse, Tows found themselves only 6 – 10 ahead despite dominating the opening period.

Tows moved further ahead after ever improving Alex Chalcraft crossed, a line out penalty was moved infield with Chalcraft running the angle to score under the posts, Browne converting to extend Tows lead to 6 – 17, Browne then found himself in the bin for ten minutes just before half time, but on resumption 14 man Tows extended the lead with veteran Centre Pepe Nanci scoring the bonus point try, converted by debutant Centre partner Ben Young

Leading 6 – 27 Tows looked in control but with Witney disrupting Tows scrum dominance they managed to get back into the game with forwards Hyde and Bennett to the fore, two quick tries from Witney’s Richard Hare and James Monks both converted by Whitehouse closed the gap to 20 -27

Further disruption to Tows with Liam Wilkinson off injured and another reduction to 14 following a second Yellow card could have seen Tows struggle but a couple of coolly slotted penalties from Young gave Tows some breathing space, Witney came back with their 3rd try of the match to close to 27 – 33 but Tows saw out the game on the opposition line, the bonus point victory moving Tows back to the Top of the Table one point clear of Swindon and Maidenhead.

Next week is Lewis Shield match with Tows taking on old rivals Northampton Men’s Own
