Towcestrians Director of Rugby, Robbie George, had nothing but praise for his sides application and commitment after calling them in for a gruelling New Years Day Training session in preparation for this league game, away at Grove, who have always proved a tough test for the Tows
The tactics paid dividends as Tows proved way too much to handle, in conditions that can at best be described as dismal, Tows put the hosts under immediate pressure and following an infringement and penalty line out, flanker Liam Wilkinson driving over for the first try of the game, Tows quickly scored again when good hands through the backs released winger Matt Yuill for the second, James Falvey converting and then poor handling from the home team in midfield saw Craig Holton gather and run in from 30 metres, Falvey again adding the extras and Tows were out to a fast 0 – 19 lead.
Tows were relentless and a second line out drive from Wilkinson gave Tows the bonus point followed by a quick tap and go from Yuill who put in Scott Browne in the corner, with Tows now completely dominant there was time for a sixth try before half time from centre Pepe Nanci, Falvey’s extras seeing the half out at 0 – 36
Grove started the second half spiritedly and had their best period of the game, pinning the Tows back in their own 22, but couldn’t convert and a great breakout by Hooker Fen Gallagher relieved the pressure on Tows.
With the game won substitutions and positional changes disrupted Tows momentum, but with the backs always looking capable of scoring good hands saw Yuill in for his second try and James Falvey, who by now had moved to Scrum Half, converted his own try. The Home side never gave up but Yellow cards made it easier for Tows and Sam Neale completed the scoring after popping over for a 5 pointer in the corner to round off an excellent performance in difficult conditions and a nine try 0 - 53 point victory.
All attention now turns to next Saturday’s crunch top of the table clash as Salisbury visit Greens Norton Road, The Tows sit 3 points clear of their Wiltshire rivals knowing a win would give them breathing space at the top of the league.
Tows 2nd XV continued their excellent season seeing off Banbury 2nd XV 58 – 0 while the Colts went down to Bedford 13 - 28
