Towcestrians knew they faced a tough test at home this week against a team that, historically, has caused them problems.
Playing with a howling wind and driving rain at their backs it was important to get off to a fast start, the large vice presidents day crowd choosing to stay mainly in the comforts of the Tows Clubhouse, a few brave souls huddled under brollies, like penguins in snow storm.
It was the visitors who started well, a penalty from Quins Hugh Dimond, Tows full-back James Falvey levelling things up a few minutes later with a penalty of his own. The Tows certainly looked to be up against it at scrum time against a massive opposition front row, however, it was Tows who took the initiative, driving the heavier Quins pack over their own line for no.8 Craig Holton to touchdown for Tows first try, Tows stepped up a notch, running the ball back in difficult conditions leading to Quins preventing a scoring pass going to hand by a deliberate knock on for a penalty try, Centre Ben Roe's strong run put him in under the posts for the Tows to turn around 22 - 3 points ahead in what was widely regarded as a "20 point wind"
In the earlier game of the season, away at Oxford, the Quins came back from a very similar position to level the game and now playing into the elements it was imperative that the Tows did not let that happen again, the next score would be a crucial one and it came after a moment of brilliance from Tows left winger Matt Yuill, Quins cleared their lines to the halfway for Yuill to gather, stepping off his right foot he slipped the kick chasers and then outpaced the cover to score in the corner.
Quins responded with their strongest period of the game, pinning Tows on their own line with a series of 5 metre scrums and line outs, Tows defended as if their lives depended on it, tight head prop and man of the match, Peter Gowler, to the fore, after absorbing all this pressure it was Tows who sealed the game after another great piece of interplay, right winger Alex Chalcraft collecting a Quins kick ahead, running infield to find his left wing partner Yuill who broke through and fed back to the supporting Chalcraft to score under the posts and cement the victory in a game which rose above the difficult conditions, partly due to the excellent handling of the game by referee Gary Malpas
The victory sees Tows 14 points clear at the top of the league with 7 games remaining and after going through in both the County Cup competitions the strength of the squad will be tested during the run in, starting next Saturday at home to Windsor in the league.
Tows 2nd XV continued their domination of local sides with a 5 - 58 mauling of Market Harborough and in the Referees Cup Tows Colts thought they had been eliminated after a 10 - 10 draw with Old Scouts, believing the away side the winner, however a quick check of the rules and it was Tows who went through having scored 2 tries to 1
