Towcestrians produced a performance that was much nearer to their very best this Saturday in an impressive bonus point win against Longton, the Stoke outfit making the long journey down from the potteries with Greens Norton Road under a blanket of heavy rain that did not lift for the whole match. Tows needed a victory to give them breathing space in a League that is very congested with few points separating top half from the bottom.
Despite suffering a string of unavailabilities and injuries it was the home side that started the best, taking the game to Longton and looking to move the ball quickly and wide despite the wet, Tows crossed early on when fast ball was spread wide to give Tows backs a two on one, Matt Yuill coolly selling the dummy to his opposite number and going over, Tows tackling and aggressive line speed was back to normal stopping Longton's heavyweight ball carriers behind the gain line and creating turnovers, again quickly on the attack, Tows were held just short of the line when Craig Holton picked and was driven over for Tows second score, this time converted by Scott Browne for a 12 - 0 lead within the first 20 minutes, with both sides looking to run the ball it was Longton who got on the score sheet next, running back a kick, Tows doggedly keeping them out from 5 metres but eventually the line was broken and Longton crossed in the corner, unconverted, Longton found some confidence from this and owned the last 10 minutes of the half but Tows determination and discipline kept them out for a 12 - 5 half time lead.
The loss of Scrum-half Gus Hopewell led to winger Pepe Nanci stepping at 9, which caused a slight disruption to Tows flow but Tows skills were to the fore to produce the move of the match, a series of rucks and quick hands saw the ball spun wide right and then moved back into the centre's where the Tows props were waiting with menace, with Zac Osborne on the dummy run, this opened up space for Peter Gowler to run an angle and Browne's short pass put the big man through with a 15 metre run in and dive under the posts, the score giving vital breathing space for Tows, converted by Browne for a 19 - 5 lead, Tows now dominating again found themselves camped on Longton's line, stout defence by the visitors held them out but eventually no.7 Jamie Warr went over for the bonus point try again converted by Browne, Longton had the last word, a series of 5 metre scrums saw their no.8 crash over for a consolation score.
Considering the conditions both sides attempted to play with ball in hand and responded to an excellent young referee, Andy Smith.
Tows have now faced all 13 Teams in the League and the reverse fixtures begin this Saturday with an away trip to top of the table Nuneaton, the teams fought for a 3 - 3 draw when they played each other early in the season at Tows.
Tows Colts progressed in the National Plate, reversing a 14 point deficit to win 39 -14 against Huntingdon, referee David Snoxall, gained glowing reports, Tows 2nd XV won 7 - 20 away at Newbold on Avon and the 3rd XV won away at Southam 2nd's 3 - 10
