Towcestrians 2016 finished on a down note after suffering defeat away at the hands of table topping Nuneaton, whose powerful side was well organised and street wise in defence, as well as penetrating in attack, despite Tows best efforts.
Nuns starting strongly with some attacking kicking and looked to spread the ball wide early on, Tows defence holding them at bay until Tows switched off after a knock-on, seen by most but the referee, to allow the home side to walk in under the posts, Tows conceded soon after, unable to cope with the strong running and offloading game played by the home side, ex-Gloucester full-back Rob Cook to the fore running back a Tows clearance kick for a second converted try.
Tows created some chances and had a decent amount of possession in the first half, but Nun's well organised and aggressive defence snuffed out chances, and despite the home side conceding penalties, Tows turned the ball over at set piece and open play, Nuneaton suffered no such worries at set-piece time and drove Tows over for their third score of the half before Scott Browne got Tows on the board with a penalty to end the half 19-3 down.
The second half started with another contentious call, a line out appeared to be formed but Nun's were allowed a quick throw in and spreading the ball quickly and wide, scored for the bonus point, Nuneaton were now finding spaces and playing with the confidence a 20 point lead brings, Cook chipping ahead and a kindly bounce allowed him to gather and offload for another score, with bodies hurting and the game gone Tows rang the changes with Matt Bodily coming on and a welcome return to playing action for Liam Wilkinson after a long injury lay-off, their first duty was to defend a 5m scrum with Tows down to 14 after Sam Sturley was needlessly yellow carded, unable to cope up-front Tows conceded a penalty try, although struggling in the tight Tows continued to play, eventually rewarded with Dave Devlin-Jones going over for the score, despite the wide margin Tows can take some positives from the game, their hard-work and tireless efforts in defence against a better team will help them for the remaining games and they remain 6th in the League.
Tows 2nd XV went down 17 - 19 to a strong Nuneaton 2nd XV, and more disappointingly the 3rd XV had to have a game amongst themselves after Old Northamptonians 2nd XV pulled out at the last minute citing reasons of not having a strong enough side to compete, Tows Colts were successful and beat Wellingborough
The next League game for Tows is on the 7th January, although there is always reasons to visit the Club, this Wednesday evening, 21st December at 6pm, Towcestrians will host BBC Radio Northampton as they broadcast "The Saints Show" live from the clubhouse, a panel of ex and current Saints players will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the Saints and hopefully the Tows.
From the Newsroom here at Towcestrians, we wish all our Players & Coaches, Members, Supporters and Sponsors a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
