Towcestrians entertained Syston at home in front of an enthusiastic Past Players re-union crowd, in a must win battle against one of the 3 teams below them in league, knowing that a win would stop their recent slide down the league and give them valuable points with the final couple of games to come
Tows opened brightly, winger Alex Chalcrafts pace and power proving too much for Systons cover as he stepped through a couple of tackles to go over for Tows first try, much to the delight of the large crowd, however, Tows frailties this season once again came to the fore as they allowed Syston easy possession from an overthrown lineout and then failed to make tackles for a very soft score as Syston went 60 metres upfield to level the scores
Although Syston propped up the league they have had some outstanding results against the top teams, proving they are a hard a determined outfit, they worked upfield again and this time as Tows infringed, kicked a penalty to take the lead, Tows pressures the visitors and made camp in their 22, without really threatening and eventually settled for a Matt Yuill penalty on the stroke of halftime.
Tows second half efforts to run at Syston floundered on a string of penalties conceded, consistently derailing good attacking positions, however, Tows eventually broke through, a clever angled run from Jamie Warr and with the defence expecting a pass, he walked through a hole to score, this was quickly followed by a brilliant high miss pass from Chrissie George, to fool the defence and find the goal hanging second rower, Kieran Frost, who plucked the pass out of the air and walked over, the conversion from Yuill put daylight between the sides, Tows had time to find a fourth try bonus point, but it was Syston who claimed a losing one with the last move of the game, as Tows continued to concede penalties, Syston moved upfield and eventually crashed over with the last move of the game
The win keeps Tows in joint 10th with Longton, with the two playing each other this coming weekend away at Longton, Sandbach slipping below the Tows by 3 points, and with 2 games left and anyone from 6th place down still in danger there is a lot of rugby still to be played, any sort of win from Tows this weekend will go a long way to seeing them remain in the league for next season.
Tows 2nd XV put Syston 2nd's to the sword, also at home, winning 60 - 26 while the 3rds gained a terrific draw against Ampthill, 12 all, Tows Colts went down 7 - 29 to the ON's in the Referee's Cup
