Tows pull out all the stops for big win

In front of a packed Vice Presidents day crowd, on a day high in emotion after the passing of long time touch judge and loyal Tows supporter, John Tustian, Tows produced a terrific performance to take the points against Cambridgeshire side Shelford RFC and move off the bottom of the table and up two places to 12th.

Tows looked as though they would be up against it after changes in the front row at the last minute and having to field two back row forwards in the second row left them looking a little lightweight, and that came to be the case, after a bright start by Tows, the Cambridge outfit started to exert the upper hand in both scrum and line out, and after a period of pressure on Tows line, which saw Callum Threlfall yellow carded, Shelford crossed wide out through fullback Toby Cracknell, who also slotted the conversion for a 0 - 7 lead. Tows wilted in the set piece under extreme pressure, but looked the better side with ball in hand, dogged defence kept the visitors out and the Tows soon broke through, some great work by Dave Williams in the centre to commit the defence and then smartly offload in the tackle to Pepe Nanci, who dived over under the posts, converted by James Falvey, with no further scores in the half Tows turned around 7 - 7

The second half was an arm wrestle with neither side managing to gain the upper hand until the Shelford no.8 was sin binned for a late shoulder charge on Threlfall, this gave Tows some much needed respite up front and allow them to play more on the front foot, gaining territory and eventually seeing Jamie Warr go over for a try from the base of a scrum, again converted by Falvey. The visitors came back at Tows and elected to scrummage a series of penalties on Tows line rather than take points on offer, and Tows heroic defence eventually led to them being awarded a penalty of their own, much to the delight of the crowd. The game closed out with Tows stifling any further attacks from the visitors to take a deserved win.

Elsewhere around the club, Towcestrians 2nd's closed the gap on the league leaders with another victory, this time beating Syston and Tows Colts beat Buckingham
