Another scoreline in this difficult season for Tows which doesn't truly tell the full story of this match, with a much changed side and Peter Gowler returning to the starting line up Tows had a point to prove after going down at home by 17 - 60 earlier in the season.
Conceding a try from the kick off was certainly not what was required against the Sutton & Epsom team who needed little by way of confidence boosting, but Tows quickly bounced back after a mix up on a Sutton defensive line-out saw the ball bounce back over the Sutton line for the ever alert Jamie Warr to pounce on the ball for a try, unconverted to close the gap at 7 - 5, Sutton missed a kickable penalty before Tows took the lead, Alex Chalcraft receiving the ball in space to outpace his opposite number and then releasing full-back James Falvey to run in from half-way, Roe's conversion putting Tows 7 - 12 ahead, with both teams attempting to play an open expansive game it was the home team who scored next through their outstanding no.8, who ran in under the posts, the see-saw scoring continued when Chalcraft cut through the centre to score, Roe's conversion ending the half with Tows leading 14 - 19 and a possible upset on the cards, the subdued home crowd impressed by Tows improvements over the previous weeks.
The game changed with the story of two scrums, Tows spurning the chance to go two scores in front elected to scrummage and with the home team making substitutions in the front row had enough to repel Tows and see those efforts come to nought, shorty afterwards Sutton in the same situation elected to scrum and this time made Tows pay with a converted try, still Tows, who could not be faulted with their wholehearted commitment, came back, Jonty Barrie's back of the hand pass releasing young hooker Harry Knibbs to scamper over, Roe's conversion putting Tows 21 - 26 ahead, shortly afterwards Knibbs left the field through injury and after a re-jigging of Tows front row saw them come under extreme pressure, this led to two scores from the home side and the game went away from Tows, worse followed after a yellow card to Dave Devlin-Jones and then a neck injury to Jamie Warr saw the remainder of the game played on an adjoining field while Warr received treatment, the deflated Tows conceding a final try to end the contest and their outstanding efforts.
After the game Sutton sang the praises of the Tows side and although Tows may be bottom of the division they are guaranteeing that they are not going anywhere without a fight.
Tows 2nd XV produced another string display seeing off Luctonians for a fine 15 - 5 league win, and the Colts progressed in the National Cup beating Buckingham.
Tunbridge Wells are the visitors this coming Saturday to Greens Norton Road, another team who enjoyed a comfortable victory in the previous meeting, Tows will be looking to again show their improvement, 2pm Kick Off.
