It was always going to be a difficult task for Tows, going away to one of the top sides in the division and a team that had already shown some class with ball in hand when they visited Greens Norton Road for the first league encounter, playing some outstanding flowing Rugby and dispatching Tows with ease in the first week of October, the 30 players unavailable through injury and absence certainly didn't help the Tows cause.
The home side soon demonstrated their intent with a quick try, converted to go 7 - 0 ahead, Tows were soon on the scoresheet with a penalty from Matt Yuill, and this prompted Tows into a long period of parity with the home side, some great Tows defence, aggressive tackling, which saw the home sids no.10 leave the field, and a slight edge in the scrums gave the travelling support some hope as the game developed, Hertford scored next however, with some quick hands and great support to score an unconverted try and move 12 - 3 ahead, the game see-sawed with Tows competitive for long periods, however, Tows good work was to be undone in the last two minutes of the first half as Hertford again worked the ball much more quickly from set piece and with good offloads and willing support runners cashed in for 2 more converted tries to finish the half 26 - 3 ahead.
The second half was more of the same, Hertford, creative in the backs, moving the ball much more quickly than Tows, and with forwards ranging out wide to punch holes and score the tries, it finished with four more well executed scores for the home side, all converted, Tows for all their efforts, unable to exploit Hertfords two yellow cards.
The injury list now affecting the 2nd XV, they went down to Burton-on-Trent for only their second defeat of the season.
This coming Saturday the Tows entertain Dorking, who lie in 10th place, having just faced the top 3 in consecutive weeks, it will be another tough task for Tows but a warm and noisy welcome is assured for the visitors in front of a packed Vice Presidents Day crowd.
