Tows secure biggest win of season

Towcestrians produced a great display in extremely testing conditions to dispatch a Melton Mowbray side that was experiencing a difficult season at the foot of Midlands 1

The tone was set early on, winger Cameron Young, running in after just 2 minutes, this was followed by a period of Melton pressure, where they retained possession but were ultimately undone by Tows solid defence, leading to a second try for Young, a break from fly-half Callum Garwood lead to a Dave Devlin-Jones try, both converted by James Falvey before Melton got on the board with a penalty kick before Young completed his hat-trick followed by Craig Holton, taking over the captaincy after the withdrawal due to illness of Zac Osborne in the warm-up, who squeezed over after a driving maul from Tows, the home side now in full control added a pushover try after initially struggling in the scrums to turn around with the bonus point well secured.

The second half saw a dominating display from Tows, Ali Haynes went over and then a bullocking run from young prop Mitchell Brown, leaving Melton defenders scattered, saw him score, and George Speakman completed a very satisfactory debut for the 1's when he went over, Holton completed the rout with the tenth try of the game and Falvey slotted seven conversions in dreadful conditions.

Tows now take a break and are in action next on the Friday 4th January away at Old Scouts, 7:30pm kickoff, Tows U23's are in action this coming saturday away at Buckingham

The First team game was preceded up on the top pitch by a Vet's game which saw a number of old faces return to the Maroon, Amber and Black of Tows after some time, including ex Skippers Dan Banks, Liam Wilkinson and Darren Snook plus ex first team regulars Chris Dodd, Ollie Taylor, Ross Mawby and many others, organised by ex-skipper and current coach, Marc Yeates, it is hoped that these will become a semi-regular fixture turning out a few times a year, the "Old" Towcestrians took on an Old Northamptonians vets side and thanks to them for turning out in dreadful conditions, and some of the younger Tows on hand to bolster the ON's squad, Tows applied pressure early on and quick feet from Austen Wheldon saw him go over before butchering a try when already over the line, Richard Carter showed his pace running in from 30 metres and then going off for a break, Matt Bodily also crossed as Tows built the lead to 30 points at half time, with rolling subs marshalled by Manager Gag Evans, Tows introduced James Hodges, Lester Cann, Tom Hutchings and Sam Smith among others, with conditions deteriorating rapidly scoring was hard in the second half as Tows went over for a try before Wheldon had the chance to drop another scoring pass, ON's responded with a driving try of their own, young Pagano with the final try of the match for Tows, the result was unimportant in the end, as great fun was had by all both on the pitch and afterwards in the bar. All involved look forward to the next fixture in hopefully warmer conditions.
