After a shock defeat in the Alliance Cup, they faced a Leighton Buzzard side fighting relegation. On paper, Tows should have run out comfortable winners. They sit fourth in the table while Buzzard languish at the bottom.
But, sapped by their impressive win at Kettering and in the face of dogged opposition, they could only manage to scrape a draw.
Tows’ skipper Marc Yeates crossed for an early try but Buzzard kept the scoreline in check with a penalty.
Sensing they had an opportunity to bag some League points, Buzzard upped their game and exerted pressure on their hosts.
Both sides traded yellow cards either side of half time, but as the second half got under way, Tows seemed to be gaining the upper hand.
A rolling maul was deliberately collapsed just short of the Buzzard line. Tows chose to scrummage from the ensuing penalty.
The pack steadily drove the Buzzard eight back and scrum half Dave Stocks was on the brink of tapping down when his opposite number somehow stole the ball.
He launched a counter attack which saw Buzzard sweep down the length of the field to score at the other end.
Deflated by the score, Tows immediately leaked another try and were looking down the barrel of a second embarrassing defeat with the score standing at 5-15.
They dug deep however and fought their way back into the game. Pete Growler finished off a line out drive and soon after Jamie Cartwright crossed to level the scores.
There wasn’t quite enough left in the tank to pull off the win but Tows will be fully recharged in time for their next League game.
