Trentham RUFC were dealt yet another hammer blow with news of the passing of Dave Cornes. Dave was a massive personality within the club that he loved, and in which he immersed himself completely. He was introduced to the club in the early 70's by Arthur Bailey, he could play almost anywhere covering the front row, back row and frequently at scrum half. He will best be remembered though as a feisty hooker who never took a backward step. Dave went on to captain the 3rd XV for many seasons. He was a natural leader, as well as, a great discoverer of new talent, especially from the Sir John Offaly in Madeley late on a Friday evening. At one stage, in the tough days of the early 80's, Dave kept many of the team employed at the power station in Oxford. He would always help out where he could and he set many people from the rugby club on the right path. Finally, he was instrumental in setting up the fixtures with Harwell in Oxfordshire and Nenagh in Ireland which became the highlight of the rugby calendar.
