Tring Corinthians first team and development team have donated food and essentials this weekend to the Aylesbury Foodbank seeded by the Trussell Trust.
As you may be aware, the government voted against extending school meals throughout the half-term. Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford campaigned for this to be voted on in the houses of commons but was denied following a vote.
With how the current climate is and COVID19 still very much with us, families up and down the country have struggled to keep jobs, pay rent and feed through no fault of their own. This just cannot happen in this modern world we live in, it is 2020.
We at Tring Corinthians AFC wanted to join the END CHILD FOOD POVERTY campaign. We wanted to help families in the local communities. NO CHILD SHOULD GO WITHOUT FOOD!!
Last week our joint-first team manager Jamie Roberts came up with the idea of the donating what we could as a team to a local Foodbank. This then made it's way to the Development team who also wanted to help. The reaction was overwhelming from the players.
Jamie Roberts said: "I was reading through twitter and listening to the radio and heard the commons vote had denied school meals for families through half-term. It made me feel sick! How can we not feed vulnerable families and children when it is no fault of their own. I have a daughter of my own, I could not stand there knowing I can feed my family when others are going hungry. I felt this is one of the worst decisions from a government I have ever seen.
We have a Whatssap group for the first team, I decided to send a message into the group with the idea of us all donating some food to a local foodbank. I did some research and found a foodbank in Aylesbury where I live and some of the players do. The minute I sent the message, the reaction was overwhelming, the players could not be more understanding and helpful. Everyone agreeing to donate what they could. It then was passed across to the management group where the Development team wanted to get involved. Amazing! Each player got a bag of food and essentials together and brought them to their respected games. I filled my car and went to the club after our away game to see another huge amount of donations. I was taken back! What an amazing response, we couldn't be more prouder of these group of players. A lot of them are under the age of 22 as well. It showed real maturity!"
On Sunday, Jamie Roberts, first team Captain Ben Sims and first team right-back Corey Flynn, gave up their time and took the donations to the local Aylesbury Foodbank drop-off point which was in Waitrose. We walked in with 5 trolleys full of bags and boxes. The staff were taken back when we walked in. They said the collection would be made tomorrow and thanked the guys for the donation.
We did try and contact the Aylesbury food bank but understandably they are very busy at present. We will contact them once again this week. Christmas time will once again be a vulnerable time for families, we hope to once again make another donation to the Foodbank in the near future, it is the least we can do!
