After drawing with Butser 19-19 during the first half of the season and losing our starting 1, 8 and 10 we knew this would be a tough game. Butser bought with them a much improved side with some better players that did not play the first game and this showed from the offset.
We started well and within the first few minutes Tommy made an excellent run off about 40 meters but did not have the support when he was finally tackeled and then Butser jackeled the ball from him and made an attack. Butser passed the ball well in the backs and their pack was strong and this was simply too much for our side. Within the first 5 minutes Butser were winning 0-10 and both tries came from their backs. Our defence was improved but we simply did not re set very well and grouped up enough to allow Butser in. We gave away lots of penalties in the first half with high tackles and silly mistakes and Butser took advantage of this and by half time it was 0-29 to Butser.
With us now on the back foot I told the players to play for pride and not give up no matter of the score line.
We started well again with some good runs and 2 back to back massive tackles by the smallest player on the pitch Robbie against their largest players. Which just showed to the rest of our team it does not matter how big you are its all about good technique and Robbie showed this straight away when coming on as 9. But unfortuantly Butser scored a quick try early in the second half and converted it to make the game over and still with 25 minutes to go it became a friendly.
The boys dug in and kept their heads high and kept working hard and thier hard work was rewarded by a strong run by Blaise to score his first try for Trojans.
The game ended 5 - 41 but 0-35 for the league.
Lots to work on and the boys need to realise its a team game and we dont want solo hero's taking the ball into contact when they could of off loaded it. Also that they need to support the runners and work hard at the break down. We also need to keep our shape in the backs and defend better.
Positives were: Our line outs worked well and we won allot of scrums against the head with good hooking from Keir and Matteo. Some good running by the backs but we need to attack more and defend more. The boys kept positive and their heads did not drop. Some players played in new positions and showed promise but we need to go back to basics. However with 3 games back to back we will have to learn as we go!
Before the game I told the boys the defence will win this game and we need to keep possession and it did but unfortuantly not for us!
Onwards and upwards and our game next Sunday will be a friendly but a more matched side so I hope to see some improvements by all.
