Trojans Chiefs 10-3
The Chiefs bounced back from the disappointment of last week's loss by beating a competitive Havant side. With no Trojans subs, Havant kindly offered to play the match in three thirds.
The boys made hard work of it in the first half and, despite dominating territory, they failed to take their chances and instead went behind to a penalty kick. Trojans played well in patches and created several opportunities, only to be let down by poor handling, losing the ball in the rucks or giving away penalties. However, the Chiefs' defence was fast and aggressive forcing Havant to kick to get get out of their own half. The forwards made good progress taking the ball forward, particularly through Joseph, Ed and Ash. Ben coped well with a series of high kicks and the backs, with new centre partnership of Fin W. and Rodrigo, always posed a threat. Ed came close to scoring, taking a good pass from Louis at pace but was stopped just short. From a penalty 10m out, Michael popped up in the back line but spilled the ball as he crossed the line.
The second half started promisingly with an excellent passing move but the ball was lost in the corner when a try was on. Unfortunately another series of errors brought Havant back into the match. They exerted a period of pressure on the Trojans, getting within 5m of the Trojans line. However the defence held firm and Thomas showed his footballing skills by kicking the ball out of a ruck and hacking on beyond the half-way line. The Chiefs regained the momentum. Ollie C. took the ball further upfield and subsequently should have received a try-scoring pass, but the ball went to ground. The Chiefs continued to push Havant back, but came against a good defence and some excellent clearance kicks.
The boys were told that the game was there for the taking. They just needed to play low risk rugby, keep it simple and cut out the mistakes. The half-backs were encouraged to use their kicking game and put more pressure on Havant. Sure enough the third half began with Josh kicking long into Havant's 22. The ball was recovered and it quickly went out to Ollie C. who finished well in the corner. Finally the boys had points on the board and took a well deserved lead. More good attacking play, particularly from Fin W, kept the pressure on Havant. The forwards were becoming more effective at the breakdown, with Louis making a notable turnover. A great driving run from Ed put the Chiefs in good field position. Matt switched the play to the blind side and put Euan in to score the second try and seal the win.
Overall it was a scrappy game. Trojans didn't play their best rugby, but worked hard throughout, they denied Havant any scoring opportunities and ground out a deserved win. Euan was man of the match for his aggressive tackling and a well taken try.
