Forwards and Backs working as one!

The day starting badly with Tom W turning up with a Quad injury, which he tried to shake off during the warm up but it was just not to be.

So with our relacement 15 now out I asked for a volunteer and Will B stepped up straight away and said "I will give it a go"

So with a bit of moving players around we were able to get 18 ready to play against a team that has strong players and a county player too umongst them. All I asked the team to do was what I asked the two previous games, Tackle well, Support each other, put lots of pressure on and play as a team. In previous games that let themselves down and did not play the way they have the potential for but today was a different day.

So straight away from the kick off and Fareham kicked the ball long and high and Will B caught the wet ball really well and ran at Fareham from the off. We were putting Fareham under pressure in their half and mostly their 22 for the first 10 minutes with Mark getting close and Waldo getting close too. However after lots of presure we were finally rewarded with a try from Waldo who made a strong run and was able scramble over the line for his first try for the club in only his second game. This try sparked more life into Farehams forwards who kept running straight at us with 3 or 4 big strong lads who then bashed us over the line to score their first for which they converted.
From then onwards we new we would need to make all the tackles and tackle low if we wanted to take their big forwards down. Farehams forwards were dominating the scrums and we were being push back more than 1.5 meters they won more than they lost. but we wanted to keep to our plan and pass it through the backs which we did really well and just before half time Waldo made another strong run and was able to score his second of the day to make it 10-7 at half time.

The second half did not start as we wanted it as Fareham scored with in 2 mins of the kick off. Thy kept putting us under pressure but the boys worked well through 1-15 on the pitch and worked as a squad to keep them at bay. More runs from Ben and Daniel and Kier made some big tackles for a small lad. Robbie did well by always putting them under pressure and which caused them to make a few mistakes which we failed to finish off and they scored again to make it 10-17 with 20 minutes to play. Fin had been working hard with his runs and even harder making every tackle count and thus was rewared when he ran well and fended off a couple of players to score making it 15-17. We continued to fight hard and we swapped a couple of backs around to give a rest for Brad and put Waldo at 10 and Fin at 12 with Josh coming in from the wing to be 13. Josh had shown some good running and tackling during todays game and kept working hard. Another try for Fareham now made the game 15-22 and we knew we could win this if we continued to work hard. The boys did and the tackle of the game was by Josh who took out one of their backs who obviously did not like it and hand bags were rasied. However the game continued on and again Josh made another tackle on the same player who again did not like it. A few minutes later Waldo was on the run again in their 10 meter area only to be hacked down 5 meters from the line. The ref decided to keep the player on the pitch and it was a penalty that we thought our forwards would relish however Farehams defence was good but it finally go through to our backs and Josh was able to score with less than a minute on the clock.
The final whistle blew and it ended up at Trojan Warriors 20 Fareham Heatherns 22.
A great game of rugby and a fantastic one to watch if you were a neutral. A game that was played in the spirit of the game apart from 1 or 2 incidents but nothing that took away a great game by two sides that fought to the final whistle.

The boys showed what they could do and now have set the bar high for them to continue to rasie as the season goes on. The last couple of games we lacked some spark in our backs but with a little resuffle they all worked really well. Especially Will B playing full back, Josh S at outside centre and Robbie working the forwards hard and linking up the backs well. Daniel and Ben dominated well in the forwards with Keir and Mark making good work too.

They have earnt and deserve next Sunday off as a rest day and then its back again for more fun and games

Well done Warriors you have a happeir coach then you did for the last couple of weeks. Even though we lost on points i feel that we won the game, considering we are the B side at Trojans.
