TROJANS 8 OLD ELTHAMIANS 0
Trojans started their 2015 campaign with a hard fought victory against Old Elthamians on a grey, dank day.
The day started on a sombre note as both teams and all supporters showed their respect for Kevin Kilford who died on Boxing Day. Kevin had supported his son Matt on the Trojans touch line over many years and his cheery disposition will be much missed. Our condolences go to the Kilford family.
The match itself was as oppressive as the weather. Both sides struggled to bring any continuity to proceedings after the Christmas break and it seemed the heavy ground was likely to sap any life out of the game. OEs had some strong runners but rarely threatened the Trojans line all afternoon. Trojans had a number of opportunities but as before Christmas a lack of composure close to the line led to those chances being spurned.
The set piece was admirable all day with the pack only being held back by the laws prohibiting a full push. The line out was magnificent with Cameron Haisman ruling supreme. Indeed the only try of the game came from a faultless catch and drive following a line out with Toby Hill emerging from the pile as the only try scorer of the game. Kal Traynor had kicked a first half penalty to open the scoring.
Whilst not a game that will live long in the memory it was good to be on the winning end of a close match after the pre-Christmas league disappointments.
The cup fixtures come thick and fast and the next round is at Home against Camberley next Sunday.
