Trojans Academy entertained Basingstoke Colts on a sunny afternoon at Stoneham Lane.
Trojans were quickly into their stride with a try after 30 seconds through Wesley C crossing the line, jinking past the Basingstoke defence from 30 metres out. Josh G converted, 7-0.
Basingstoke came back into the game with their forwards taking the game to Trojans but their defence was strong.
Trojans scored again through Wesley C with Josh G converting again to take the score to 14-0. Basingstoke came back at Trojans and scored a deserved try through an impressive fast paced break, which they converted.
Half Time 14-7
The second half started brightly with the Basingstoke pack starting to dominate and drive the ball forward but each time the Trojans defence held firm however the penalty count was rising.
Trojans started to get back into their stride and were pressurising the Basingstoke defence. A forwards move went out to the backs and Josh R crashed over in the corner to take it 19-12 with 20 minutes to play.
Basingstoke attacked relentlessly through their forwards and came close to scoring when one of their backs juggled the ball five metres out and dropped it.
With the penalty count rising the referee gave Trojans 2 yellow cards in the next five minutes reducing them to 13 men. Basingstoke took their chance and crossed the line through a forwards move and converted the try to take it 19-21.
More drama was yet to come as Trojans pushed forward in search of the win and they were awarded a penalty for a tip tackle 40 yards out close to the touchline.
Tom KO calmly placed the ball down and pointed to the posts. He struck the ball well but it hit the post and rebounded into play.
Final score 19-21 to Basingstoke.
Trojans were left to rue missed chances and a high penalty count in a game that was well within their grasp to win.
But congratulations to Basingstoke for the win. Plenty to work on and develop in the weeks ahead for Trojans Academy.
