Trojans Academy edge close thriller of a game at Water Lane

Trojans Academy travelled the short distance to local rivals Tottonians for their first fixture of 2017 looking to build on the momentum from 2016 and give skipper JC a win on his birthday. The conditions were challenging for both sides with a heavy pitch and darkening skies
The game started off with the home team camped in Trojans half for the first 5 minutes with their backs and forwards combining well to create opportunity after opportunity. Trojans held firm however an infringement led to an early penalty which Totts took, 3-0 . This seemed to shake Trojans from their post Christmas slumber and soon they were on the front foot being guided by the half back pairing of Harry J and Tom KO and taking every opportunity to gain territory in the Totts half. With the home team on the back foot and the Trojans scrum in the ascendancy the only area that let Trojans down was their passing to hand causing a number opportunities to be missed.

The tempo on the pitch was rising with Totts not able to get out of their half as Trojans pushed on. The tackling from both sides was aggressive and physical. Will B and Dan W were noticeable in the loose, taking the game to the home team with Christian CM and Tom N also making gains. Eventually from a line out the Trojans rolling maul which had been held up twice already managed to cross the line with Will B scoring, 3-5. With ten minutes left in the half Trojans came back sensing another try was there but Totts defended in a resolute manner. A move from a line out allowed Tom KO to launch the backs which led to Ben S crossing in the corner 3-10.It was good to see the spirit of Rugby was being observed when as Tom KO started his movement to take the conversion a Totts supporter reminded him he had 50 seconds left to take the kick.

Half time score 3-10.

The second half started off with Totts in good form and a creative move from a scrum led to a try, which was duly converted in silence, 10-10 with most of the half to go. The home crowd now became the 16th man cheering both their team as well as each Trojan error; the atmosphere was hotting up. Totts were resolute in their focus to win the game.

The next 20 minutes was spent with Trojans probing away at Totts with backs and forwards combining well. The tackling was ferocious with the referee keeping excellent control of both teams as they sought to gain an advantage. Trojans were boosted by Josh G in the midfield along with a revitalised Mikey G in amongst the forwards. Shortly afterwards Trojans lost scrum half Harry J which enabled the welcome return of Ben S to the team after a long period out injured with the other Ben S moving to 9.For all their territory Trojans did not come back with any points letting several chances going missing with Totts holding them up three times over the line. From a similar position near the Totts 5 metre line Tom KO launched Mikey G who played a missed pass to Josh R who released Sam W to score in the corner; 10-15 with 5 minutes to go. Skipper JC was encouraging the team to go forward and score. Wave after wave of opportunity came but Totts held on.

Full time 10-15

A good away win for Trojans in their first game for 3 weeks against a hugely positive, organised and tough tackling Tottonians side. Afterwards skipper JC was pleased with the performance and how the team worked well together. The coaches noted the areas for improvement and development ahead of the coming weeks training and approaching fixtures. Plenty to work on and develop in the weeks ahead for the team.

Man of the match Will B.
