Academy lose tough away fixture at Winchester

After last weeks cancellation the Academy were back in action against Winchester in the Colts league. The Academy were looking to take their National Cup form into the league where they were having a mixed season.
The conditions were wet and overcast with the the pitch heavy going and energy sapping. This was not going to be a classic against their old rivals Winchester.

Trojans started well and were working the ball through the forwards as they sought to gain territory and retain possession. Winchester pushed back and started to move into Trojans territory with their influential 10 and 12 pushing through the midfield. A running move from deep almost resulted in a try but a solid tackle put the flying Winchester winger into touch .Trojans lost the busy Charlie MC to a ankle injury shortly afterwards which led to a reshuffle of the pack.

As Winchester pressed forward Trojans defence pressured them into a mistake and Wesley C in ran in a try from 60 yards; 5- 0 after 10 minutes.

However Winchester came back hard and Trojans led by Will B hit their tackles and made life difficult for the usually dominant Winchester pack . David M and George C were dominant along Mike G in defence. Josh G was noticeable in the work rate he was putting in in the centre.Winchester kicked the ball away at every opportunity with the industrious Harry J supported by Harry C and Sam W seeking to counter attack with the ball in hand. The Trojans defence was exiting well from defensive situations with Wesley C outstanding .Winchester however got a deserved try when the scored in the corner near the end of the first half .
Trojans went in at half time to reflect on a half of missed opportunity, poor decision making and dropped passes.

Half Time 5-5

With the crowd wondering what the second half would bring Winchester were straight out of the blocks. Their replacement fly-half continuing the first half approach kicking for territory and pushing Trojans back into their half forcing them to make the hard yards. Trojans were starting to give away needless penalties and Winchester took every opportunity to kick for line outs.

Trojans held firm and the conditions worsened.Harry J soon had to leave the field with injury. With David M and Josh G firm in defence Winchester were kept at bay .The home team had sensed the game was there for the taking and as a collective unit combined to put constant pressure on Trojans. From a line out a rolling maul took the ball over the line and Winchester toot ht lead 10-5.

Final Result Winchester 10 - Trojans 5

Josh G was a deserved man of the match putting on a very strong defensive display in tough conditions.

Afterwards the team and coaches agreed that the team who played the conditions better on day won. Trojans have plenty to work on in training and the weeks ahead as they move into the final stages of the season. On a positive note it was good to see the squad approach working well with a number of players rotating positions and contributing.
