Trojans Academy sought to finish their league season with a win against Havant.
After last weeks win convincing win away against Basingstoke and narrow loss against runaway unbeaten league leaders Alton this was the teams last chance to contribute to their points total and improve their position.Having lost 4 games by a combined total of 15 points against Alton and Winchester who were above them in the table Trojans knew the challenges of fine margins.
Once again Trojans squad was tested with a number of changes but they took the field in a confident and determined manner.
From the kick off they took the game to Havant pressing forward with Mikey G and Will B noticeable in the forwards. However Havant were determined and started to counter attack with their no8,10 and 15 seeking to challenge the Trojan defence. Trojans secured possession from a line out in the Havant 22 and set up attacking platform after attacking platform resulting in the ball being passed through the backs finding Prop Charlie C masquerading as a winger to take the ball over the line; 5-0 with 10 minutes gone.
Trojans were back under pressure from the resulting kick off with Havant seeking to punch holes in the centre of the defence but David M was putting in his usual shift supported by Tom N and Dan B.The backs Joe J and Sam W were creating opportunities whenever they got the ball irrespective of the positions they were in.
Trojans pressed forward again with Christian CM and JT creating a opening for Mikey G to move forward and release Charlie C to take a difficult pass calmly and cross in the corner 10-0 .Trojans now had two of the four tries they needed.....
Not to be held back Havant once again came back and a skilful move that cut the Trojans defence apart in the centre of the pitch led to a try which was converted 10-7. Could the game be going the way of recent games; this was now a test of Trojans resolve and character.
Half Time 10-7
As the team huddled together Mikey G drove home the message that the team needed and they were focussed and ready to go into the second half.
Both sets of supporters waited nervously with the game delicately poised and could easily go either way.
To be fair Havant came out of the traps stronger and more focussed pushing forward and controlling the game.Trojans showed their normal steely resolve in their 22 and had good exit strategies.Havant kept coming back and the penalty count was growing.
With 20 minutes to go the game was in a stalemate position and becoming an arm wrestle between the two teams.
With Trojans gaining more territory but still failing foul of the referee and penalty count the outcome was looking increasingly like a Havant win due to their positive attacking intent.
Trojans then clicked into action; a line out led to several phases of pressure before the impressive Tom N dived over to score to take the score to 15-7 and more importantly score Trojans third try. This seemed to lift Trojans who now stepped up the fluency of their game creating platforms but also passing along the line using the ball sensibly with Josh G and Wes C combining well.
A counter attack led to Wes C feeding the impressive Ben S to run in from 30 metres outpacing several Havant defenders to score under the posts; 20-7 with Josh G converting to take the score to 22-7.Trojans had scored their 4th try.
Havant still attacked and kept pressurising the home team. Another counter attack led to Joe J scoring from 10 metres to score the 5th try for the home team. Josh G converted to take the score to 29-7 with three minutes to go.
Havant wanted to score and came back strongly from deep but Trojans held firm to take the home win 29-7.
Full time 29-7
Whilst the score did not reflect the Havant performance Trojans had secured a bonus point win and found their mojo. In the huddle after the game coach Billy O said it was the best forwards performance of the season.
Trojans now go into the end of season play offs looking to improve on the performance and challenge the squad again.
