Trojans came away from Teddington pleased with the losing bonus point but disappointed that a first win in four years away to Teddington was just beyond them, going down 16 - 10. The sides were evenly matched and produced an excellent game of rugby although Trojans seemed to suffer from the new law “interpretations” and gave away too many penalties. The general pattern of play was that Trojans made good progress into the Teddington territory only to be penalised and put back to their own 22 by some good Teddington kicking. This to be repeated at regular intervals.
Trojans made a good start and got well into the Teddington 22 but lost the ball and Teddington put in a very long kick down the field. Full back Joby Kochanowski fielded well and made a good run back into the Teddington half from where an attack was mounted and a 5m line-out saw Fraser Moncrieffe snatch a loose throw and feed Marcus Coffin who went inches short of the line. Play was then fought out in the middle of the park until, on the quarter hour, Teddington kicked a penalty. Toogi Long almost replied a couple of minutes later but his long distance penalty just went wide. On the half hour Teddington put Trojans under pressure again with a long kick to touch in the corner. From the line-out Teddington spun the ball wide and Trojans were penalised for a deliberate knock on and Teddington kicked the ensuing penalty. For the rest of the half Trojans put together some good attacking moves but were undone several times by giving away penalties allowing Teddington to kick back deep into the Trojans half. Half time, 6-0 to Teddington.
Within minutes of the start of the second half Trojans got a penalty after a Teddington attack and the ball was sent to the Teddington 22. From a fairly loose line-out Fraser Moncrieffe grabbed the ball and made for the line, slipping the ball to George Goff to dive over. At the Teddington kick off the ball went straight to touch and from the resulting scrum Trojans made good progress and set up a line-out on the Teddington 22. A Trojans scrum was given on the 22 but, for the only time in the match, Trojans lost the ball and the attack was over. It was then Teddington’s turn to attack and a long kick and chase to the Trojans line almost gave them a try but the Trojans defenders just got there in time. From the drop-out Teddington had possession and were awarded a penalty which was successful. Both sides developed some good open rugby but, on the half hour, it was Teddington that grabbed the initiative and scored in the corner which was converted. Despite their good inter-play, Trojans were giving away too many penalties including one where flanker Dave Linton seemed to be penalised for “running too fast” from a line-out. For the last ten minutes Trojans were on all-out attack and were rewarded, right on time, with a Kochanowski try to give Trojans the bonus point, final result being 16 - 10 to Teddington.
