Trojans were pleased with the bonus point win over Weybridge as things didn’t look that likely at the end of the first half during which Weybridge were generally on top and Trojans suffering from too many mistakes. But the second half was totally different with Trojans taking the initiative from the start and preventing Weybridge from getting back in the game.
Trojans spent the first ten minutes camped in their own half and defended well but then a great break by winger Tom Stevenson took play to the Weybridge twenty two and from the ensuing loose play Rudi Kochanowski bundled over the line. Weybridge then took the initiative helped by some poor Trojans handling and gained two converted tries. Just before half time a Weybridge player was yellow carded for a high tackle and the penalty was in a very kickable position but Trojans opted for a scrum from which some good interplay ended with young prop George Cottrell scoring his first try for the Club on only his second first XV appearance. Matt Evenhand converted to make the half time score 14 – 12 to Weybridge
Trojans started the second half the stronger and on five minutes a strong run by Dave Linton took play from the half-way line to the Weybridge line and Matt Evenhand was in close support to score under the posts to give himself an easy conversion. Play then concentrated around the middle of the field but with Weybridge tending to lose their way and Trojans getting on top. On the half hour Trojans worked their way to the Weybridge line and, in a bizarre bit of play, a Weybridge defender tackled a Trojan attacker without the ball creating a large gap through which Johnny Smyth darted to score giving Evenhand another easy conversion. Trojans were now well on top and, when Weybridge won their own scrum on the half-way line, they failed to control the ball and Trojans scrum-half Haworth picked up and dashed for the line finally slipping a pass to Greg Ward who had an easy run in to score and another conversion for Evenhand. Trojans remained well on top for the rest of the game and the win was topped off, right on time, with number 8 Chris Boyd dropping a goal to make the final score a 36 – 14 win.
