A close game

If ever the old saying of a game of two halves was valid, this was it. Trojans were well on top for the first half and ended it with a comfortable lead but seemed to lose their way in the second, allowing Teddinton to get control and to end up only four points behind.

Seven minutes into the game, Trojans put in some good interplay, rapidly working their way to the Teddington twenty-two where Matt Evenhand was on the end of a slick move to score under the posts, adding the extra points himself. Teddington then went on the attack and secured a penalty following a scrummage infringement. Play then swung to the Teddington half and Evenhand was, again, on the end of a good attacking move to touch down under the post and take the conversion. Right from the kick off Trojans repeated the previous play and this time it was second row Alex Williams to go over near the post to give Evenhand another easy conversion. Teddington then got more into the game and spent some time in the Trojans half but, on twenty-five minutes and on his own ten metre line, winger Elliott Culley took advantage of a loose Teddington pass to sprint to the far line hotly pursued by three Teddington players but got to the posts first for an easy Evenhand conversion. Teddington then put in some good running moves and, on the half hour, caught the Trojans defence flat footed to gain a goal. From the kick-off, Trojans took advantage of Teddington indecision and took play down to a five metre line-out from which flanker Greg Ward crashed over in the corner with Evenhand converting from long range. Teddington finished the half strongly and good forward mauling saw them over the line for a goal just on half-time.

With a 35 – 17 lead and generally outplaying Teddinton, Trojans seemed to be coasting to a comfortable win but how things changed! Teddinton kicked off, Trojans failed to collect the ball but Teddington did and ran straight through to score a converted try, all within thirty seconds. Teddington then generally took control and, on ten minutes, gained a pushover try and a long range conversion to bring themselves to within four points. That turned out to be the last score of the game although both sides put in some good work with Trojans mainly on the defensive but they hung on in a tense finish to win.
