Trojans met a much changed U S Portsmouth side to the one they recently beat convincingly in the Hampshire Bowl and were ultimately beaten by the dominate USP forwards.
Trojans kicked off, gained possession and pressurised the USP line but the USP defence held firm and moved the play back down the pitch and, on ten minutes, put a good move together to score near the corner with a good long distance conversion. Play moved back and forward but with Trojans having to defend hard against the bigger USP forwards. On thirty minutes, USP were pushing the Trojans line and a Trojans forward was yellow carded. From the ensuing scrum USP crossed the Trojans line and the ball was held up but the next scrum saw them crash over the line to score with another good conversion to leave the half-time score 14 – 0.
The USP forwards dominated at the start of the second half and on the quarter hour mauled the ball over the Trojans line to gain another goal. Despite being under pressure, Trojans kept play alive and a neat cross kick from the half-way line by fly-half Johnny Smyth was gathered by winger Sam Walker who dashed down the line to score in the corner. USP immediately responded by attacking the Trojan line and a five metre scrum was pushed over the line and touched down to make the final score 26 – 5.
