THE WHITE Tigers go into Saturday’s final game of the season at home to Slough Town knowing that only a win will be good enough, allied to results elsewhere going in our favour, for us to escape relegation.
We face opponents who sit safely in the middle of the table following their promotion into this level at the end of last term.
We have already beaten them 2-1 away in December, so we’ll be hoping to complete the double.
“It’s time for the talking to stop and for actions to speak louder than words,” said manager, Paul Wilkinson. “We know what we have to do and we’ll be fully focussed on ensuring that we do our part by getting the three points before looking at what has happened elsewhere.
“We go into the game on the back of an Easter period which saw us show plenty of battling qualities to come back from two goals down to share the spoils at Hampton & Richmond Borough on Monday afternoon, whilst before that, our last game here against Gloucester City, saw us put in arguably our best performance since I have been at the club.
“On that occasion we created enough chances to have won more than one game, so it was extremely frustrating to see us get no points to show for our efforts.
“Football is full of fine margins; we controlled that game and looked the most likely side but we have fallen the wrong side of it on this occasion.
“We started the second half well but when the penalty didn’t go in, all of a sudden we are on the back-foot. That said, we kept going and pulled a goal back towards the end but it wasn’t quite to be.
“Then at Hampton, we looked the most likely side for much of the opening period but then fell behind against the run of play before having the sucker-punch of conceding a second goal right at the start of the second half.
“It would have been easy for heads to drop and for the lads to be resigned to their fate, but instead they rolled their sleeves up and with our travelling contingent right behind us, we managed to get back into the game and stuck to our task to the very end.
“We know that if we perform to these levels on Saturday, we will give ourselves every chance of getting a winning result.
“The players are ready for the challenge and by everyone working together, we can do this.”
