On November 8th, Tupton played their sixth fixture of the new season and secured their second victory after defeating Gainsborough in their last fixture, they continued their winning streak in a memorable effort against Sleaford.
Straight from the kick-off, the tone was set. Tom Eyre burst through Sleaford's defensive line, and mere seconds later, Luke Marshall did the same, quickly offloading to the ever-present Will Eyre who secured a try in the corner. Sam Cooper effortlessly converted.
The whole first half was filled with dominant phases of both attack and defence with memorable moments including excellent pressure in a kick chase by Brad Kirk, Oliver Eyre and Will Eyre that granted Tupton a turnover placing them in a dangerous position to attack, another such moment was Vice Captain James Blakey breaking down Sleaford's defence and gaining Tupton the extra yards necessary to allow Sam Cooper to kick the penalty that granted Tupton an extra 3 points.
Other memorable moments included another great spell of defence by Oliver Eyre who applied so much pressure on a Sleaford player in his chase of a kick that the player fumbled the ball and Tupton were awarded a lineout.
Another standout was Danny Grattage’s try. in the last fixture against Gainsborough, Danny scored his first try of the season, when asked to comment prior to Saturday's game, he said "I've developed a hunger for try-scoring.” That was clearly evident by his performance, bringing his tally to two tries in the last two games.
Strong scrummaging by the forward pack held a steady position and gave the backs room to play, culminating in a try for Jak Smith, which gave ample separation between Tupton and Sleaford.
The final try of the half for Tupton came off of the back of another scrum, where the ball landed in the hands of Brad Kirk, who picked a hole in Sleaford's defence. When he was eventually caught by two defenders, he skillfully used his free arm to offload the ball to Tupton's Vice Captain and Player of the Month, Adam Barker who successfully scored.
The half ended on a slightly sour note as afters at the ruck gave way to a try for Sleaford with the half ending at 27-12.
The second half began with three changes of possession, with the ball eventually landing back into the hands of Tupton's Fly Half, Sam Cooper who performed a crossfield kick, this kick landed perfectly in the arms of Oliver Eyre who avoided defenders and ran over the try line for what would have been his first try, however disaster struck when the ball slipped from his grasp as he attempted to ground it, rendering the try void.
Tupton then took a while to warm up in this half; going a man down when Jamie Barnett received a red card for a misplaced elbow on the jaw of a Sleaford player, however a strong tackle from Captain Jordan White brought some spirit back into the game and eventually Tupton got back to their usual scoring ways with a giant leap over the ruck from Sam Cooper adding five points to the scoreline.
Just moments after his try, Sam Cooper put himself back on the scoreboard with a penalty kick, then again after a series of resilient scrummaging earned the team some valuable yards, and after a somewhat scrambled lineout, Sam Cooper found himself under the posts again after finding another gap in Sleaford's defence.
In the final ten minutes of the half, Sleaford saw themselves matched in numbers to Tupton as their second row received a yellow card for repeated offences. After being awarded a penalty, Tupton decided to try their luck in the now even scrum, this decision proved to be fruitful as excellent work from the pack- especially the front row of Jack Fox, Stu Lye and Omead Serati- drove Tupton just short of the try line, where Scrum Half, Josh Rose, was then able to dance around Sleaford's defenders and place himself on the scoreboard.
In the end the final score was 47-12, a result which was truly deserved after eighty minutes of intense gameplay from the squad who showed strength, resilience and adaptability. Sleaford awarded the Man of the Match award to the playmaker Fly Half, Sam Cooper, whereas the less prestigious award of DOD was awarded to Oliver Eyre for his unfortunate try-line fumble.
The result was a true representation of the hard work and effort put in by the team, the Director of Rugby, Rob McGeechan, and Coaches David Dean, Sam Curry and Richard Kirk.
