Cup Final ends in defeat for Tweedmouth

Gordon completed a cup treble on Saturday afternoon, as the Forsyth Cup final went the way of the form book, Gordon coming out on top 2-0 from a hard fought affair.

It was Tweedmouth who had the first chance of the game; a long throw from Wood was flicked on at the near post by Wright and headed narrowly wide by Phillips, under pressure from the covering defender. They were made to pay for this on the quarter hour mark, as Turnbull was adjudged to have bundled over the Gordon attacker inside the area. The resultant spot kick gave Cain no chance and Gordon took the lead.

Tweedmouth thought they had equalised on 25 minutes when Antcliff rounded the keeper to score, only to find that he had been given offside. On the stroke of half time Gordon came close again when an attack down the left wing was cut back for the centre forward, only for goalkeeper Cain to intercept. At the other end Phillips came close again, this time beating two defenders on the edge of the area, but his strike was saved by the legs of the keeper.

Tweedmouth made a bright start to the second half, Tait crossing from the left wing only inches away from the head of Antcliff. Gordon replied at the other end, Wood clearing off the line from a corner. Lauder had the next chance for Tweedmouth, after being put through by Phillips, but from a tight angle his shot was forced wide by the keeper.

Midway through the second half Gordon extended their lead. A slick passing movement on the right led to a pass to the edge of the area, where the shot was deflected past Cain. Three minutes later Tweedmouth thought they had a lifeline after Lauder was brought down by the Gordon keeper, but after initially giving the decision, then consulting with the linesman, the referee reversed his decision and a drop ball was the final verdict.

Tweedmouth were becoming increasingly desperate, pushing more players forward in an attempt to get back into the game. This enabled Gordon to play on the counter attack and Cain was again forced into a good save to tip the ball over the bar from a lob from the edge of the area. Lauder forced a save from the Gordon keeper in added on time, but there was no further scoring and Gordon ran out winners.
