First game back in the A league ends in defeat

Tweedmouth opened up their Division A league campaign with the long trip to Peebles, but unfortunately returned home empty handed. The visitors opened the scoring after ten minutes, after new signing Robertson had his shot parried by the keeper, but another new signing Hainsworth was first to react and lobbed the rebound into the empty net. The next ten minutes saw the home team have a sustained period of possession without ever threatening the visiting goal. Then a long ball through split the central defenders and in his attempt to make up ground Phillips pulled back the centre forward, who tucked away the resulting penalty.
The Amateurs almost took the lead early in the second half. A long range effort from Nicky Clark bounced in front of the keeper, who did well to push the shot onto the post. Stobbart then kept the Amateurs level with a fine save from an indirect free kick from inside the box. The home team did eventually take the lead when Sharp lost possession and a cross from the right was met with a powerful header at the back post.
A change of formation saw Matty Tait moved into the striker role and this almost paid immediate dividends, but his shot was blocked by a great last ditch tackle. The same player did level the match moments later, getting on the end of a knock down from Wright.
Again the home team pressed forward looking to regain the lead and twelve minutes from the end a corner from the right was not cleared and amidst the scramble the ball was poked home at the back post. Tweedmouth were forced to play the last ten minutes with only ten men, having used their only available substitute, when Nicky Clark was forced off with a hamstring injury.
Amateurs committed more men forward in an attempt to take a late point from the game and Matty Clark hit the cross bar with a cross which almost deceived the home keeper. Their fate was sealed however in the final minute as Sharp, trying to see the ball out of play, was robbed of the ball and the cut back was stroked home to secure the points.
Tweedmouth are away again this Saturday with a league match at Jed Legion kick off at 2pm.
