Chirnside take the points in close fought derby

Playing well but not taking anything from a game is becoming a habit for the Amateurs. After going over two years without dropping a league point at the Five Arches, Tweedmouth have now lost two in a row at home, Chirnside taking all three points from this hard fought derby.

Chirnside knew that a win could see them move to the top of the league and they got the perfect start to the game. A scramble following a corner led to a Young shot, which crept in at the far post. The goal seemed to rally the home team, who started to show more urgency and intensity as the half wore on. Tweedmouth then started to dominate possession and win the vital midfield battles. But despite having the lion’s share of possession, the home team were limited to shots from long range and crosses from Robertson which Wood did well to steer towards goal, under pressure from the visiting defenders.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Tweedmouth pushing forward more and more looking for the equaliser, with Chirnside looking dangerous on the counter attack. Twice the home team hit the woodwork in the second half. Firstly Wood hit the crossbar from a free kick and then substitute Hainsworth did likewise with a looping left foot shot from the edge of the box. At the other end, only great defensive work from Walters and Stobbart stopped the visitors from adding to their lead as they counter attacked, exploiting the gaps left in the home defence as they poured forward looking for the elusive equaliser.

Both teams deserve a lot of credit for this entertaining and hard fought game. The Chirnside rearguard standing firm to everything the home side could throw at them.

Tweedmouth would like to thank Ideal Beds and Michael Guthrie for sponsoring the match.

Next week Tweedmouth face Tweeddale Rovers at Five Arches in a Division A league match.
