After winning both our qualifying games at Christmas, the U22s were entered into Cup competition in the Shenton Cup at the Surrey Finals.
This entailed three matches of 30 minutes.
With a talented squad of 17 boys, of which 4 were colts, Andrew Morgan was quietly confident the boys could rattle a few feathers at Esher RFC.
First up was Edenbridge.
The first 4 or 5 minutes was evenly matched. Out of nowhere Alfie Jones ( second row) decided to side step two players from the half way and score the best try of his Twickenham career.
It was all one way traffic after that, with Mo Elata scoring a text book try under the post in the second half.
Final score Twickenham 22 Edenbridge 7.
Next up was Cranleigh.
From the kick off Twickenham controlled the game and went ahead from a couple of early tries. Unfortunately, towards the end of the first half Mo Elata and Oscar Jansen clashed heads and had to leave the field due to concussion. Unfortunately T's were down to just 15 players for the remainder of the afternoon. The forwards were now seriously punching above their weight, which enabled Michael Morgan and Cameron Hill at 9 and 10 to control the game like seasoned pros.
Twickenham 28 Cranleigh 7
Finally Old Ruts on the main pitch.
One more win would secure the Shenton Cup. It was a close game where Twickenham had the majority of possession, but just couldn’t finish it off when they got into the red zone.
Old Ruts had made many a substitution, as they had a squad of 25 boys. Twickenham again had looked the most likely to score, but just couldn’t get over the white wash. With 2 minutes to go the backs moved the ball down the blindside with slick hands enabling Sam Slaney to score in the corner.
With two minutes left of play the boys defended superbly.
Twickenham 5 Old Ruts 0
Special mention for Bartholomew Boyd, Cillian Frisby, Oscar Gordon and Mason Murray who as colts were outstanding today.
Also a special mention to Andy Puffett for coaching the boys today, which was very much appreciated by all.
This season the U22s have played 5 and won 5, the talent coming through club is second to none.
